When I go to my site and try and access my personal photos, I get a WinCustomize page error.  Has the personal photo service been discontinued?

Should you upgrade hardware made for XP?

Mar 28, 2008 2:54 AM by Discussion: Personal Computing

Thought I put this up for those interested to kick around.

Last year I began to feel somewhat hardware constrained.  My PC is an HP Media Center machine from mid 2005.
I had added a low end graphics card ATI Hypermemory type to HP's standard configuration.  So, I had a 2.4Gz
AMD 3800 single core CPU, 200 GB's of HD storage, 1 Gb of Ram, and a starter graphics card.

This was initialy adequate but, recently it was feeling sluggish and performance constrained, especially on some games.
So, I began to wonder do I try and save up alot more for a whole new system or put in some money on upgrading what
is currently obsolete technology?

I went ahead and opted for upgrading my current system.  Here's what I added: Removed old RAM and installed 2
GB's of fast OCZ memory(PC 3200), a new power supply (Corsair 450W 80+ Cert.), a new graphics card (Full featured ATI
DirectX 9.0C 512MB card), and 300GB external HD(no spare internal slot).

So, am I happy with this decision?  Yes, it's worked out great.  The additional memory makes it possible to play
games without windows swapping out to the pagefile.  The games I play are more responsive now and with the full
featured graphics card newer games such as EE3 play well and everything can be run at higher graphics quality settings.
Moreover, since XP is still the largest installed base of home PC's, many new software titles will be made XP compatible
for awhile into the future.  I am thinking at least through all of next year.

So, I believe I can now wait until sometime next year to relook at a new system where I will get more bang for the
buck options to consider.  A super fast duo-core system will be cheaper next year as will entry level quad core
machines.

So, what do think?  Are you sticking with your current technology?  As you may have noticed the decision for me
switched from an OS centric one, when do I need Vista?, to a hardware centric one, how to have adequate hardware
performance?  This was because I realized, for me, Vista isn't required --- yet.

Will you join in a petition

Hi everyone.  Will you consider sending an electronic petition to China's government in support of free speech, political freedom of choice, and self directed autonomy for the indigenous people of the Tibetan Plateau.  Your support and help will be appreciated. Again the link.  [Link] http://www.avaaz.org/en/tibet_end_the_violence/98.php/?cl_tf_sign=1 [/Link]

Need an assist

Mar 21, 2008 2:07 AM by Discussion: Internet
I am hoping since SoSE Forums are hosted on Stardock servers that I can request help here.  There's a thread I was foolish enough to start that really does need to be locked once and for all... and left that way.  The various ahh "forum participants" there are using it for their personal dumping ground.  It would be nice just to see that thing buried once and for all.  Any possible assistance in this would be appreciated.  The thread cannot be missed.  Thanks.

Do I still have it and it's been hidden by an installed app or is something else going on?

Mar 20, 2008 4:50 AM by Discussion: Personal Computing

Hi all,

Well as a result of Po's thread Virtual Memory Question I've discovered that when I click on start, run and type in msconfig and press enter ...... nothing happens.  I fired up explorer and searched my windows sub, no go and did a system Search twice and again no go.  Did some web searching and discovered one of 2 possibilities an installed app has it hidden from my through a system key setting or in the worst case malware.  At present I'm not suspecting malware.  System has no other problems currently and it's possible any of these progs could have it hidden: Ad-Aware 2007 Free, SpyBot Search and Destroy (I'm new to both of these) I also have Tune-Up Utilities 2006 and please don't gasp, Norton System Works(well mostly, lol).

Anywho, I thought I'd post to see if anyone has some insight as to what's caused this and what Reg Key(s) might be involved.  I'm thinking that's probably what's happened.

Oh boy here we go again

I have attempted to upgrade to the lalest version of SoSE(1.03.021) using SDC and TotalGaming.net, it hangs.  I've tried both servers US-1 and US-2.  It hangs immediately after it packages (I have it set to archive) at the file load list.  No actual downloading of any type takes place. Just thought you might like to know.

What is GDM*.exe

Feb 10, 2008 10:43 PM by Discussion: Windows XP
I've recently been getting some new process showing in task manager called GDM7.exe Yesterday I also saw one with a different number can't remember for sure maybe GDM12.exe. I tried a Yahoo! search and a Google search and found a German thread on HiJack this that had some discussion on GDM7.exe but, I couldn't make much sense of it. Anyone know what this is and where it's from? I killed the process and it doesn't seem to be causing any system stability issues I'm aware of but, what is it?

You know the net and software. They are always getting something to start running on my system without my direct consent. Almost every package has an auto nag feature for updates or go visit them, it's no wonder my system memory is constantly being slowly erroded by wanting to try software and in some cases needed, the list: Itunes, QuickTime, RealPlayer, Adobe Reader and since I got my DSL from AT&T Yahoo more stuff to deal with. Yuck! Nothing but work to tame these software packages. Almost makes you want to run vanilla windows just to preserve my peace of mind and ensure system stability. Of course then there would be no net video, music or radio. Sheesh! Competition is producing hassle for the end user.

So enough of this for now anyone know what GDM*.exe is?

taskbar is transparent

Sep 5, 2007 12:43 AM by Discussion: WB 6.0 Beta
I'm using WB 6 5.91[b].038 and have tried adjusting the settings. The aerial taskbar remains transparent. This only happens with the aerial theme. Any solutions?
